Today we’d like to introduce you to Seth Crapp.
Hi Seth, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a board-certified radiologist and Diplomate of the American Board of Radiology with a Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) in pediatric radiology. I was born in Trenton, New Jersey. My dad was earning his Master’s degree in Urban Affairs & Domestic Policy at Princeton. After graduation, my parents returned to their hometown Miami, FL, where I grew up. I graduated from Florida International University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry & attended Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. After obtaining my medical degree, I completed an internship in internal medicine at Mount Auburn Hospital, a Harvard Medical School affiliate, & a did radiology residency at the University of Florida College of Medicine in Jacksonville, FL, where I was Chief Resident. I subsequently completed a fellowship in pediatric radiology at Vanderbilt University, at the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital (Vanderbilt Children’s). After my fellowship, I worked as a pediatric radiologist in private practice for some of the largest practices in the United States. In 2019, I decided to turn my focus to working more in pediatric imaging and took a position with Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in Miami, FL.
While I assumed this would likely be the role I would retire from, I wanted more autonomy, and COVID happened. During the pandemic, my group began incorporating more telemedicine into our workflow. Teleradiology became a predominant feature of our practice. I had an epiphany and realized a significant opportunity in teleradiology. I decided to forge my path and started South Florida Radiology. During my career, I have served in leadership roles on several non-profit boards and in community organizations, including Knots4Kids, Inc (Jacksonville, Fl) & the Artists Showcase of the Palm Beaches. I am currently vice-president of the Florida State Medical Association (National Medical Association). I am a life member of the FIU Alumni association and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc and serve as Chairman of Wellness and Care for the Southern Region of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Incorporated. I have served on the Society for Pediatric Radiology (SPR) & the American College of Radiology (ACR) committees. I have been published in peer-reviewed journals and co-authored two books.
I am a 2017 Florida International University Torch Award recipient, an honor given to distinguished alumni. I am also an Alumni Ambassador for Meharry Medical College.
Since August 2020, I have served as Chief Executive Officer of South Florida Radiology, an independent, physician-owned, and operated teleradiology practice. The company’s mantra is “Compassionate radiology .”Currently, my company provides professional radiology interpretive services for imaging centers and clinical facilities in multiple states. I also serve as Chief Medical Officer of Pediatric Teleradiology Partners, a new subdivision of South Florida Radiology that provides critical fractional pediatric radiology coverage utilizing teleradiology nationwide. I am an avid art collector and jazz enthusiast in my spare time. I also enjoy travel, cooking, and mentoring through organizations like Alpha Phi Alpha Gamma Zeta Lambda Chapter, Prince Hall Masonic Order, and 100 Black Men of Tampa Bay.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced?
I have faced some significant challenges after launching my company. Specifically, there was a substantial drop in radiology volume during the pandemic. This decrease in volume caused much instability for radiology practices across the country, resulting in layoffs amongst doctors of all specialties. At this point, I had to make a critical choice of whether to stay the course or throw in the towel and seek stable employment. I chose the former route and hadn’t looked back since.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I recently launched Pediatric Teleradiology Partners, a sub-company that fills critical pediatric radiology coverage gaps with virtual locums and overflow coverage in a cooperative synergistic fashion. We consider ourselves partners of our clients and not competitors. We seek strategic partnerships and alliances to bring much-needed expertise to communities and health systems that lack it.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I have a deep passion for mentoring and seeing the next generation of professionals achieve their goals. I am a strong advocate for diversity and have worked with my alma mater Florida International University (FIU), on initiatives and outreach to increase the number of minorities, especially Black males, in college and medicine. For underrepresented students, I have also created endowed scholarships at both FIU and my medical school alma mater Meharry Medical College School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee. I have enjoyed living in Tampa Bay since moving back in 2021 and look forward to working with like-minded individuals and organizations in the Tampa Bay area on synergistic goals.
